The purpose of a tapestry stand is to keep the tapestry in shape and to hold the canvas is held in place. A frame reduces the likelihood of your work going out of shape while you stitch, and on a similar theme, a frame keeps your work under tension, which in turn helps to keep your stitching even.
Medieval and renaissance tapestries were first developed in Europe to decorate castles and large churches. ... Castles and large stone churches were drafty places that are hard to keep warm during the winter. In those days, insulation was unheard of, therefore tapestries were placed in buildings to keep them warm.
