Bats symbolize death and rebirth. Sometimes, they are known as the “Guardian of the Night.” It is largely misunderstood and so therefore many of its symbolic meanings are inappropriately fear-based. The bat is a symbol of rebirth and death because it is a creature that lives in the belly of the Mother (Earth).
In the Chinese culture, the bat is viewed as a symbol of happiness. They are amazing creatures. Bats can fly in huge hoards while never hitting each other because of echo-location. This ability is linked with the gift of clairaudience, which awakens the ability to hear spirits in some beliefs.

When homes were warmed solely by naked flames, fireplace screens served as a shield to protect the occupants from the intense heat of the fire. The screen also helped prevent embers from spitting out the fireplace and into the room.
